Preludes And Nocturnes

Not as important post

November 30th, 2006

I hate it when I’m walking and my long scarf gets caught between my legs (unbeknowst to me) and kinda rides up my crotch so I’m walking with this kinda scarf diaper going on.

Today is balmy. From the last week of -25 to -38… today at -6 is TROPICAL! I wore my little cute jacket rather than my ‘old Russian grandma outfit’ as Leone puts it. Hey, old Russian grandmas know how to keep warm.

Stage One is DONE!

November 27th, 2006

WHOO! Just got a letter (Leone called me at work) and I’ve been approved to sponsor Jim!

Yay!

It was processed NOV 20 (thus proving the stalking of the website was a little off time-wise as I thought we’d be approved this week). The entire package has now been sent to Buffalo.

Er, now we have stage two. Time range given 4-15 mos.

Blarg.

But we’re hopeful the lower timeline is for those who filled it out right and the tail end is for crazy people.

Yay for Stage One!

Working Out is HARD.

November 26th, 2006

Just getting there. Ya know? I’ll go for two weeks and it is great - I’m there 4+ times over the week. Some weeks I do a handful of my shorter days with a quick run/cardio/whatever for 30 mintues plus stretching, other days (usually the weekend day(s) plus one other in the week) I’ll do my cardio plus an hourish of weights.

I’d love to do three cardio/weights sessions a week and two cardio-only for a total of five each week - but I’m okay with the fact that doesn’t happen all the time. Getting a minimum of three a week is okay by me.

So then last week comes along. Stupid power out means two nights were taken up with moving food to fridges that work and then back again. Wed I was just so glad to get home (finally!). Thurs and Fri were TOO DAMNED COLD. Yesterday we did all our errands and were already out and about for four hours. So I went today and ran two miles (GO TEAM ME!) and did my basic weights (about 45min) so with warm up and cool down and stretching I was there for about 1.5hrs.

I guess one way to look at it is 1.5 could also be three ‘normal’ workouts for most people. But, I really wish I could make it to the gym more consistently when things go wonky.

Or, I don’t know, less wonky times. Yeah. That works too.
:)

Freaken Cold!

November 25th, 2006

It has been minus 25 for two days now. Booger freezin cold. I’m moisturizing like a mo-fo. And the roads are crazy-bad.

But Leone and I have finished our errands and are now settled in with kitties and bears and warmness and no clue for dinner as when we got to Costco my card was not in my purse. Blarg.

Oh, and to see the crafts I’m doing I’m going to be lazy and post somebody else’s picture (man, what did one do before google image)?

But these pics are pretty much what I’m doing. I got this little kit for quilling - did I blog about this already? And after a few smaller projects I’ve now started making snowflakes. Gave one to my friend as a thank-you for us staying with her during the power-outness.

Yay, pretty snowflakes. They are crazy intricate and really very beautiful in person. I’m thinking up all sorts of little things I can do with them, and making my own designs now and everything.

Post more pictures of the cards I’ve made and what not when I’m not so lazy.

Edited to add: okay, so I didn’t actually post what I was doing for my craft. It is called quilling and it is pretty much twirling paper around this little tool thingy. There is some serioulsy FUGLY stuff people do with it, but I love the flowers and the more classic designs. But no, I don’t plan on quilling a life-sized replica of my childhood dog or a fulling functioning toilet paper dispenser.

I kid you not.

WE HAVE POWER!

November 22nd, 2006

Yay!

So me and Leone and kitties and bears were all back in the same house with EVERY SINGLE LIGHT TURNED ON - OH YEAH!

Yet I still managed to not set my alarm correctly and Leone woke me at “15 minutes until you need to leave” o’clock. I’m now at work eating a soy bar and soon heading off in search of the coffee kiosk.

And we got a blizzard type thing last night that dumped TOO MUCH SNOW and took us down to minus 13. I’ll give you wintery pictures later!

Turn around bright eyes!

November 21st, 2006

Hee, that is one cheesy video.

Okay, so last night they said power would be on at 6pm. But they made the mistake of saying that to me at 6:30pm so *meh*.

Today they’re saying 8pm which really leads me to anther *meh* face - except I saw the guy that lives at the end of our block (yay for a small institution) who has been staying with his sister but who has a mom in the next block down from us (old folks’ home so they have a generator) and she told him the power is back on her block this morning.

Did you follow that?

I’m slightly hopeful.

I miss my house and my kitties and my tv and my computer and my new craft!

Oohh I’ll tell you more about craft later. Like, after I can DO SOME OF IT.

Yeah, Could Someone Get the LIGHTS!?

November 20th, 2006

Sunday at about 2pm the massive windstorm took out our lights along with thousands of others in northern BC. Oh, but not the people across the street from us…

Leone and I toughed it out and then went for dinner at Boston Pizza. We got home and toughed it out but decided we’d bunk together for warmth. Furnace is off too. Mom gave us the wake-up call this morning and we made it to work/school.

But now we’re at evening #2 and we can’t take the cold or the dark. So we’re at a friend’s for the (tv) evening. I’m seriously bummed. Between work sucking lately and now this, I’m not doing well. I’m bummed and down and feeling horridly low. I had a workshop today which was cool, but it means I’ve not been online all day. So *wave* to all, and I hope to catch up on emails and the like tomorrow at lunch.

I’m sure I’ll be better soon.

Xoxo.

Hobbies

November 18th, 2006

So I’m thinking my evenings need a hobby. I considered getting a baby but it has been pointed out that hobby lasts quite long and I can’t store it in the rubbermaid bin in the back room when I’m bored of it (like my cross-stitch).

So what is a good new wife(TM) hobby? When Jim isn’t here I’ll sometimes work out in the evenings. But I want something that I can do at home when he’s here. Kinda still being together, but hanging out and doing our own things.

I was thinking of some sort of crafty thing. What’s big these days? Cross-stitch isn’t doing it for me right now. Too much time to complete.

And I don’t want huge start-up costs.

It seems I was a single girl for ages and ages. And then when we were dating I was doing grad school so my evenings were pretty much writing, tv, or nookie (another good hobby). But now at a loss with trying to find something to do together, and also at a loss being done grad school.

Suggestions?

Made It!

November 18th, 2006

Last week? Yeah, how much did that suck? Weird shit. Meetings with important faculty yelling at each other, people crying, 35 other people looking at the floor. Weird phone calls, weird errors with computer systems, weird weird weird. And confrontations. On multiple levels. Different departments. Not just one person in one area. Just strange stuff all over the place.

I don’t feel that there is any fallout coming, things just came up and went away - but it just seemed like everyone was off and the week never settled down.

So yesterday by 10am I had a horrid headache brewing. To the point of turning off my lights, closing the blinds, and taking four advil.

But I made it.

And now I resolve to spend the weekend playing Sims and working out.

Um, NO!

November 17th, 2006

Using text-message language on exams.

I cringe every time I get an email from a student using this short-hand CRAP! No. No No No.
